An all-party meeting in Jammu and Kashmir expressed deep shock and anguish at what it called a "barbaric attack".

Reports said that hundreds of people attended Shah's funeral, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who told reporters that the man was killed while trying to stop the attackers.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah distanced his government from the event, saying it had been organised by private entities, and asking local authorities to investigate the matter and submit a report.

Officials are investigating the "mysterious deaths" of over a dozen people - most of them children - in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier this month, assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the abrogation.
