It was known in French as the Eye of God; and the Rose of Heaven.

And the gray dawn came creeping up the world, while in the eastern sky it was as though an angel of God had plucked a red rose of heaven and scattered its leaves abroad.

They all have quaint names, that in the west façade being called the “Rose of the Sea”; that in the north the “Rose of the Winds”; that in the south the “Rose of Heaven.”

Above me in the eternal blue Fluttered white clouds, And sparkled the eternal sun, The Rose of heaven, the fire-blossoming, Which joyously was mirrored in the sea.

O Love, the glory nears; The Gates of Pearl are flung apart, The Rose of Heaven appears.
