One in three new engineering patents involved cycling technology, and among the inventors working to extend its potential were Henry Ford, whose gas-powered Quadricycle prefigured the Model T, and the Wright brothers, the bike merchants from Dayton, Ohio, who would design the first planes capable of sustained flight.

A number of The Henry Ford’s own artifacts will be on display, including a working replica of auto industry pioneer Henry Ford’s 1896 Quadricycle.

Todd Scott, executive director of the Greenways Coalition, says cycling in Detroit is more successful now than any time since the 1890s, when Henry Ford built his first car, the Quadricycle, from bike parts and rode to his factory on two wheels.

Blaszczyk said that “nine times out of 10,” the participants exploring Detroit on quadricycle weren’t previously aware of new businesses they were seeing.

Ohio’s quadricycle law was approved a couple months before the Michigan one.
