In Gomphotheriidae, the narial region was most similar to modern day elephants, suggesting they had a relatively flexible trunk.

The large narial opening at the highest point of the head probably indicates an aquatic mode of life, and there seems to have been a soft valve to close the nostrils when under water.

The lacrimal fills the remaining rim of the narial opening between the nasal and maxillary, and extends to the anterior edge of the orbit.

The maxilla encircles the posterior border of the naris and extends dorsally above the naris to an extent sufficient to indicate the probable exclusion of the lacrimal bone from the narial border.

The anterior narial aperture in the skull opens upwards, but the orifices of the nostrils are placed at the end of the muzzle.
