John Hipkin KC, defending, said Felton had recently suffered due to the death of his mother and a cancer diagnosis.

Felton, of Penyrheol Road, Gorseinon, Swansea, was sentenced to two years and four months on Friday and Judge Paul Thomas KC said he suspected a head teacher attacking his deputy was "entirely without precedent".

"The underlying motive for the shooting remains unknown," Judge Sarah Whitehouse KC said.

Prosecutor Michael Shaw KC said it was clear from an examination of the scene of the shooting that the gunmen had positioned themselves at the rear of the property and fired six shots from what appeared to be a Glock 9mm handgun.

Judge Paul Thomas KC told Swansea Crown Court he was imposing the order not as punishment, but for "ongoing, probably lifelong, medical help".
