At Swansea Crown Court on Friday, Recorder Christian Jowett fined Network Rail £3.75m, saying the company had failed to put in place proper measures to protect the workers.

Matthew Adams, 33, was assaulted at the Gough Arms in Jowetts Lane, West Bromwich, in the early hours of 19 March last year.

Sentencing, Recorder Christian Jowett said: "This was a significant intrusion in their homes."

As the Victorian classicist Benjamin Jowett once said, “We have sought truth, and sometimes perhaps found it. But have we had any fun?”

Dr Adam Jowett, chairman of the British Psychological Society's sexualities section, said: "Clinicians can still help people fully explore their gender identity where appropriate but it's time for this unacceptable and harmful practice to end."
