Dr. Rohini Haar, an emergency room doctor and adjunct professor at UC Berkeley who has researched the use of projectile weapons nationally with the organization Physicians for Human Rights, said the dangers of such weapons at protests are “not hypothetical,” but well documented over decades.

The foundation’s Office of Inspector General is sending two people to the remote station for roughly two weeks to prepare “for a future on-site presence in Antarctica and meet with staff to explain our role,” Lisa Vonder Haar, the office’s chief of staff, said in an email.

“We are in the process of expanding our investigative mission to include the investigation of criminal violations that occur in Antarctica,” Lisa Vonder Haar, the chief of staff for the OIG, wrote in an email to the AP confirming the visit.

Vonder Haar said its special agents have been responding remotely to complaints from workers in Antarctica since July and it plans to have a presence on the ice during future summers.

Dr. Ter Haar said pugs and French bulldogs are mostly affected, although larger dogs such as boxers and chows can also suffer from overbreeding.
