Steelheads migrate to the ocean and return to their natal streams to spawn, while rainbows spend their lives in freshwater.

The scientists analysed the footprints to understand how the animals had moved, and suggested the different dinosaurs had "milled around" shallow freshwater lagoons.

The annual competition, held by the Mountain to Sea Conservation Trust, aims to raise awareness for New Zealand's freshwater and marine life.

“Our waters are connected. Our freshwater ecosystems, groundwater aquifers, rivers, wetlands and other waterways are all interconnected,” said Ashley Overhouse, a water policy advisor for the nonprofit group Defenders of Wildlife.

The freshwater cisterns that the monkeys relied on as a water source were destroyed.
