There are still so many flavors of independent grocery stores — the crunchy-granola macrobiotic health food store, the Mexican tortilleria, the specialty pantry a la Alison Roman’s First Bloom or Ina Garten’s iconic Barefoot Contessa — but in his book “Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America,” author Michael Ruhlman details how we as a country moved relatively rapidly from the days of the neighborhood grocer to those of the big-box supermarket.

It also provided a clear blueprint for getting started, with recipes and meal suggestions that at the time would have been considered extremely crunchy-granola, because a lot of people had no idea what crunchy granola actually was.
