The corpus spongiosum originates in the pelvis and travels as a narrow tube surrounding the urethra until it reaches the glans.

Its single erectile body is divided into a collagenous corpus fibrosum and a highly vascularized, expandable corpus spongiosum.

This is mainly due to the greater development of an unpaired, median portion, analogous to the mammalian corpus spongiosum, which is much less prominent in the Ratitae; the muscles of this type are derived solely from the anal sphincter.

The main substance of the penis is composed of three cavernous bodies, the paired corpora cavernosa penis, and the single corpus spongiosum, or corpus cavernosum urethræ.

It should not wound any important organ or vessel; that is, it must avoid the rectum, the corpus spongiosum, especially the bulb, if possible, the artery of the bulb, and in every case should leave the pudic artery intact.
