Each pump had suction and discharge pipes of 29-inch bore, and was driven by a compound engine.

The addition to each high pressure cylinder of a low pressure cylinder constitutes a compound engine, and if the engine has also a condenser, it is a compound condensing engine, an example being shown in Fig. 3392a, which represents an engine in which the link motions are employed to vary the points of cut off of both cylinders, as well as to reverse the engine.

For surface condensing the 1600 would be divided by 50, giving 32 tons per day; and for a compound engine the 1600 would be divided by 60, giving 26 tons 131⁄3 cwt. per day.

These vessels are now invariably fitted with the compound engine and surface-condensers.
