Swansea University said it had introduced one-off support payments to help with the costs of accommodation, travel, childcare, and postgraduate study.

Newport Primary School already runs its own breakfast club, but the government scheme provides an additional 30 minutes of childcare, enabling the breakfast club to start earlier in the morning.

High Green Primary School is one of 750 schools in England taking part in a pilot allowing parents to access half an hour of free childcare each morning.

"We have the one of the most expensive systems in the world… today I want to reform our childcare system".

From Tuesday, thousands of parents can access half an hour of free morning childcare as part of the trial that will run to July, ahead of an expected national rollout.
