That etched fragment, the Rosetta Stone, allowed the French researcher Jean-François Champollion to decipher the writings of the ancient Egyptians two decades later — and open the doors to a world of knowledge and discovery.

Bearing inscriptions of the same text in Hieroglyphs, Demotic and Ancient Greek, it was used by Frenchman Jean-Francois Champollion to decipher Hieroglyphs from 1822, opening up understanding of ancient Egyptian language and culture.

It faces the Champollion Museum, which incorporates the house where the scholar was born in 1790.

A group of about 40 activists blocked the screening of the French premiere of Polanski’s film “J’accuse” at a theater in Rue Champollion, although the film was shown at some other theaters in Paris.

The competition’s name — The Champollion Mystery at Plougastel-Daoulas — is a reference to Jean-François Champollion, the so-called “Father of Egyptology” who is credited with decoding the Egyptian hieroglyphics on the famed Rosetta Stone.
