Al Kamali disputed a claim from former Olympic 5,000-meter champion Said Aouita, who said he had seen expensive Rolex watches and piles of cash in Al Kamali’s suitcase and that his assistant said the watches would be left on the African officials’ beds.

“All the legends of track and field – from Paavo Nurmi, Haile Gebreselassie and Kenenisa Bekele, Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe, Kip Keino, Henry Rono and Paul Tergat, Said Aouita and Hicham El Guerrouj - were 5,000m and 10,000m athletes,” he said.

Morocco's multidistance whiz Said Aouita takes on Brazil's '84 champ Joaquim Cruz and Britain's Steve Cram at 800 m.

Whoever his modern descendant might be -- the Moroccan Said Aouita, likely as not -- he will almost certainly be in Seoul.

He had completed the two laps in 1:43.45, comfortably ahead of defending champion Joaquim Cruz of Brazil and the celebrated Said Aouita of Morocco.
