Misinterpreted song lyrics are a fairly common and usually hilarious phenomenon called mondegreens. A mondegreen is “a word or phrase resulting from a misinterpretation of another word or phrase that we hear鈥攚ith amusing results.”

The US Pledge of Allegiance is a common casualty to misinterpretation by kiddos, who learn it but may not even know what it means! Struggling to make sense of the pledge, they come up with mondegreens like:I led the pigeons to the flag (I pledge allegiance to the flag) …and to the Republic for witches鈥� dance (for which it stands) …invisible (indivisible)and liver tea and just us four, all (liberty and justice for all).
