What is the聽origin of聽pi?
Pi is the Latin name of the sixteenth Greek letter, 蟺.聽(Mathematic notation borrows from a multitude of alphabets and typefaces.)聽The first recorded use of 蟺 as a mathematical symbol comes from聽the聽Welsh mathematician William Jones in聽a 1706 work called聽Synopsis Palmariorum Matheseos, in which he聽abbreviated the Greek 蟺蔚蚁喂蠒苇蚁蔚喂伪, (meaning “circumference,” or “periphery”) to its first letter: 蟺.
What does聽辫颈听mean in mathematics?
The mathematical pi is defined as “the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.” It鈥檚 also known as Archimedes鈥 Constant, after the ancient Greek mathematician of the same name, who, in addition to coming up with an algorithm for calculating pi, also invented an early type of irrigation pump called the Archimedian screw. Very medieval-sounding, but we digress.
What makes pi so magical is that it doesn鈥檛 matter how big or small the circle may be: the pi ratio remains the same.
Pi is what鈥檚 known as an irrational number, which means, in part, that “it can never terminate or repeat when written out in decimal form.” As far as we can tell, it goes on forever, which is a bit聽mind-boggling. Computers have calculated pi to decimal places in the trillions.
It is also a聽transcendental number, a concept that聽exceeds the scope of this post but is interesting in and of itself.
What is Pi Day?
Pi Day is the March 14 holiday commemorating the聽mathematical constant聽蟺 (pi), written numerically as 3.141592+, and pronounced聽“pie.” And yes: lots of people mark the occasion by eating pie because why would you pass up an occasion to eat pie?
What is the world record for memorizing聽pi?
Memorizing as many digits of pi as possible has become an obsession for many.聽The Guinness World Record for memorizing digits of 蟺 was held by a man named Rajveer Meena, who set the record in March 2015 at the VIT University in Vellore, India. It took him 10 hours to recite the 70,000th decimal place of 蟺 without a mistake. And just six months later, a man named Suresh Kumar Sharma, also from India, surpassed Meena by getting 70,030 digits right in a little over 17 hours. Kind of makes us feel inadequate for all the times we鈥檝e forgotten our 4-digit PIN.
