tidal wave vs. tsunami: What's the difference?

Tidal wave is a non-technical term for a wave caused by a hurricane or strong wind. It鈥檚 used more technically to refer to a wave caused by gravitational forces of the sun or moon. A tsunami is an unusually large wave caused by seismic activity such as a seaquake or undersea volcanic explosion. In the past, tsunamis were mistakenly called tidal waves.
